Dune Movie Review 🎥🍿
Another week, another new movie to review!
Just under 2 weeks ago, the new movie adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel 'Dune' finally hit the big screen on the 21st October.
After watching the trailer a few months back, the new movie has finally arrived in the UK and we couldn't wait any longer to head to the cinema to watch this highly anticipated movie.
From a star studded cast to Hans Zimmer, here is what we thought of the latest blockbuster to hit the big screen.
What is Dune about?
Dune is about a young man born to high status called Paul Atreides (played by Timothee Chalamet) whose family have been offered a dubious gift from their Emperor: a desert planet called Arrakis, inhabited by native people called the Fremens who have been brutally oppressed by a savage race of warriors known as the Harkonnens.
Our thoughts:
Let's start off by saying that we couldn’t help but get Star Wars vibes from this movie. Not only does Oscar Isaac aka Poe Dameron star in this movie, but the landscape took us back to Tatooine (which we loved!).
The adaptation covers two-thirds of Frank Herbert’s classic novel. Having not read the Dune books by Frank Herbert, we went into the cinema screening blind and with no high expectations.
What originally drew us to this movie was the star studded cast! Starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, just to name a few!
Here at VU, we're not ashamed to admit that we are major fangirls of Zendaya! So we were really disappointed to see that Zendaya hardly featured in the 2 hours and 35 minute long movie as we expected to see her for a bit longer than jut 7 minutes!
Seeing Dune in cinemas made us realise that watching this movie on the big screen is probably the closest we’ll ever get to that feeling people had watching Star Wars for the first time back in 1977.
This movie is quite an overwhelming watch but in a good way. It’s a great set up for what’s to come and the beginning of a much larger story. As a viewer you are most definitely left hungry for more!
Another highlight for us was the music score composed by the legend that is Hans Zimmer. When you see Hans Zimmer's name, you know it's going to be a great movie. For us, Hans Zimmer brought the Dune soundtrack to life.
The closing scenes of the film leaves the plot exceptionally open-ended, and it seems as though we’re only just getting started within the world of Dune and we’re so excited to see what the future holds!
AND it’s already been announced that there will definitely be a sequel! With Zendaya’s character having a bigger role in the sequel - yay!
(We kind of expected there would be a part 2 as the opening title sequence reads “Dune: Part 1.”)
Mark your calendars: The Dune sequel is expected to hit cinemas on October 20th, 2023.
