Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Movie Review
Sonic the Hedgehog is BACK! And our beloved blue friend is bluer, bigger and better than ever!
Fun fact: Did you know that the first movie Sonic the Hedgehog is officially the most successful film based on a video game EVER?!
From returning favourites to new characters, get excited for Sonic's new adventure in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
The new movie picks up following the conclusion of the 2020 movie release.
Settling in at his new home in the town of Green Hills, Sonic soon begins sneaking out of the house late at night in search of adventure.
The speedy sequel sees the beloved hero, Sonic pushed to his limits as the evil Doctor Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey) hunts down a powerful artefact known as a Chaos Emerald. Doctor Robotnik is then assisted by Knuckles the Echidna, a powerful new adversary that's able to match Sonic's speed with sheer brute force.
Sonic then must team up with his new friend Miles "Tails" Prower to save the world once again.
Lessons are learned, friendships are formed, bonds are strengthened, dance-offs are had and the jokes are a little questionable.
With targeted primarily at an audience of eight year olds, we went in with low expectations but we can confirm that we really enjoyed it!
We'd even go as far as saying that the action-packed sequel is bigger, better and way more fun than the original movie.
This time around, Sonic is joined by Sonic legends, Tails and Knuckles who are both excellent additions and certainly add different layers to the plot.
Sonic 2 builds on the first movie and is an entertaining watch from start to finish. The story is about the power of friendships and it's most definitely a message that shines throughout.
The action scenes are both fun and hilarious to watch. AND all we are saying is, keep an eye out for Rachel...let's just say she is a FIESTY one!
For us, Jim Carrey stole the show with his return to the role of Dr. Robotnik. It seems as though he was born to play this role and we hope that he will reprise the role again (fingers crossed!). Idris Elba did a fantastic job of voicing Knuckles too.
With move sequels you are often introduced to a bunch of new characters, in this movie we get to know and understand Sonic a lot more alongside being introduced to some of our favourites from the games. Best of both really!
Some have said that despite being a movie about a speedy hedgehog, the issue this time around is that it all goes on a little too long. Ironically.
We would be the first to admit if we got bored during a movie, but we didn't find ourselves clock watching with this one! Sonic 2 delivers heart, humour and authenticity for the whole family to enjoy. It's an action-pack ride that fully embraces its video game roots.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is most definitely a more confident movie, with the same mix of family fun and nostalgic elements for the long-time fans.
With dozens of characters and plotlines available in the Sonic universe, we can't wait to see what the future holds for Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends.
If you enjoyed the first movie then you will most definitely love this movie! So if you're a Sonic fan and are planning a trip to the cinema, then be quick because it will be gone before you know it! Also, make sure you stay for the end credits scene...just saying.
And just when you thought it was all over, don't worry Sonic fans, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has already been given the green light!
Alongside another movie, Knuckles has been given his own spin-off series on Paramount+ where Idris Elba will reprise his role as the grumpy antagonist.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now out in UK cinemas and out in US theatres on April 8th.
